Ornatrix is a plugin (presently for 3dsMax) that performs hair simulation
for multi-purpose assignments.
It provides a general framework that handles hair modeling, animation, and
rendering to complete an independent package for both realistic and
stylistic fiber synthesis.
Features:
- Modeling:
Ornatrix Basic has a built-in modeling system which is a combination of
conventional hair editing techniques such as real-time combing, control
point manipulation, and area displacement. It's brushing interface allows
users to do things like 'spray' on hair roots, comb hair and cut it like
you would with scissors. You can shrink, grow, 'push or pull', and
freestyle hair to get the results you want.
You can also import hair from any spline shape, or export them into
spline. If you have a model guide spline, you can use it to plant roots
and insert that spline into them right away. Planting roots can be done
through a spray brush, or by adding individual roots onto a scalp or skin.
Same way you can remove roots, move them, and do other manipulative
operations.
Be it short or long hair, fur, or any other strand based structure, there
are tools for you to shape it the way you want.
Our unique channel-based system allows you to change structural and
optical properties of dense hair. You can control anything from clustering
to displacement to hair color and thickness with any standard procedural
or texture map. Making hair look dry or wet can be accomplished as easily
as changing clustering and specular options. Channels can be also made
writeable so you can paint any of the maps right onto the hair in
real-time.
- Rendering:
There are different rendering mode in Ornatrix to suit accuracy, style,
and computational time you desire. You can render hair as a volumetric
substance, which ensures correct light scattering through volume. You can
also render hair as a post-render effect, which is faster but less
accurate.
There are many scattering modes available. From simple phong shading, to
complex elliptical fiber with scales and axial deviations simulation, you
can make hair as realistic or synthetic as you want. Ornatrix shadow
provides a volumetric shadow algorithm that gives extra depth and realism
to hair. It is also able to casts shadows onto objects as well as receive
shadows from them.
Ornatrix has been noted to be fast while rendering. On some machines we
were able to render hundreds of thousands of hair segments in less than a
minute. Like most other hair packages Ornatrix doesn't use polygons for
rendering, instead it uses fast hardware accelerated scan conversion to
perform quickly and efficiently.
- Dynamics:
We provide a basic dynamics system for hair simulation. You are able to
preview dynamics in real-time inside a viewport and adjust settings
interactively. Ornatrix will accept any of the standard spacewarps and
force fields into its simulation. You are also able to add external
objects for collision detection.
